It’s not unusual to get a call from someone shopping for a telemarketing list and during the conversation they’ll say they aren’t having any success with what they are currently doing. During the course of the call and trying to find out what their needs are it’s not uncommon to say that people just aren’t picking up the phone. At this point one of the first things I ask is, “What kind of Caller ID are you sending out, are you using a number local to the area you are calling?” Most of the time the answer is NO.
People today look at the caller ID before answering a call and if they don’t recognize the number the likelihood of them answering drops. BUT, if the call is coming from a local area code they are much more likely to answer. In fact according to a survey as much as 4 times more likely to answer.
Local Presence is dialing using an outbound caller ID that is a local area code to the prospects you are calling. If you are a local company calling only local customers this isn’t a problem. But if you are doing a larger campaign covering an entire region or the whole country this becomes an issue. Even using a toll free number can make people less likely to answer. Choosing the caller ID that you transmit is easy to do with most Dialer and VoIP phone systems. You can pick what number you want the called party to see.
You do want to stay legally compliant with your outbound caller ID when calling for telemarketing though. The number that you display need to be a number that you own and if possible the name of the company should be displayed as well. Also the number that is being displayed for caller ID needs to be a number that can be called back to ask not to be called again.
